Video Game Developers Begin Lowering RAM Requirements for Upcoming Releases

When it was revealed in January that Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight would require 32 gigabytes of RAM, players were puzzled. For an open-world project, the requirements seemed excessive. However, developers at TT Games have halved their ambitions in the face of a memory shortage caused by artificial intelligence.

The first appearance of the system requirements on January 17th sparked a strong reaction. The previous installment, 2022's Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, was content with 8 gigabytes. The studio justified this by stating the game was still in development, and the numbers on Steam had to be listed in advance for pre-order collection.

In an update on February 13th, the recommended threshold dropped to 16 gigabytes. The developers warn that the requirements may still change.

Lego Batman is not the pioneer: the spy action game 007: First Light also started with 32 gigabytes but lowered the bar to 16. The studio cited a misunderstanding.

Memory prices have doubled due to the AI boom. Valve has acknowledged that the shortage has impacted the release schedule for Steam Machines.

Lego Batman will not be the last game forced to rewrite its requirements.
