Why Combat Addons Are Being Disabled in World of Warcraft Soon: Blizzard Gives a Clear Answer

Why combat addons are being disabled in world of warcraft soon blizzard gives a clear answer

Blizzard is preparing for fundamental changes to dungeon and raid design in World of Warcraft. In an interview with PCGamer, Lead Encounter Designer Dylan Barker and Senior Game Designer Kim Flack revealed details of a new approach that will address the years-long dominance of combat addons.

The developers acknowledged that the situation had gotten out of control: top guilds were hiring programmers to create custom WeakAuras that solved boss mechanics for players. In Mythic dungeons, addons were so effective at tracking interrupts that the designers had to pack groups with monsters to the limit to create any semblance of difficulty. The coordination capabilities of addons forced the studio to focus on arcade-like mechanics and reflex checks instead of strategy and interaction.

Now, by limiting addons, the developers can finally return to what always made World of Warcraft great — challenges that require the right decisions, not button-mashing speed. The boss design for the first season of Midnight is built around puzzles, strategy, and team coordination. Increasing the difficulty won't add new mechanics but will heighten the demands on communication — something that was previously impossible due to the total control of addons.

Simultaneously, a hunting system is being introduced into the game, aimed at shaking up the routine open world. It's an unfair mechanic in a good way: an enemy can attack at the most inopportune moment, forcing players to thoughtfully assess their resources and surroundings even while performing ordinary tasks. On normal and hard difficulty levels, enemies won't bother players out of combat, but in nightmare mode, being AFK in the open world will become a death sentence — you'll have to either log out or hide in a city. The hunt will add unpredictability and surprises to the game for those who miss a living world where danger can lurk around every corner.
