More than two decades after the release of the original Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, King Art Studios has officially confirmed the development of the fourth installment of the cult real-time strategy game. Project Game Director Jan Theysen shared the first details, emphasizing: the team strives to preserve the spirit of the classic while introducing modern gameplay mechanics and conveniences.

One of the developers' key tasks has been to simplify control while maintaining gameplay depth. Dawn of War IV is expected to feature more complex unit management — the player's army will be numerous, and combat will be intense. However, according to Theysen, the project's philosophy is built on the principle: the player should perform a minimum number of clicks without losing access to key mechanics.

Unlike the original, the fourth installment will introduce an important new feature: players will now be able to mark groups of enemy units for subsequent attack. The system will automatically determine the most logical targets for the player's troops to focus their fire on. At the same time, pinpoint control is preserved — for example, you can direct the entire might of your army against a specific enemy vehicle or a particularly dangerous foe. This will allow for a combination of automation and tactical mastery, leaving the final word on priority selection with the player.

Jan Theysen also spoke about his personal experience gained while playing Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Definitive Edition. As a developer, he was particularly annoyed by the inability to move the camera using the WASD keys: he had to move the cursor to the edge of the screen each time, which seems archaic today. In Dawn of War IV, the team has taken such feedback into account. Players will have access to a customizable control scheme, including free camera movement via WASD, flexible key bindings, and optimized interfaces for quick access to orders.

The return of Dawn of War is a significant event for fans of the Warhammer 40,000 universe and the RTS genre as a whole. The developers are carefully balancing respect for the legacy with adaptation to modern standards. The grim aesthetic, epic battles, and signature style of the universe will remain unchanged. At the same time, the game will offer modern mechanics: automation of routine actions, intuitive control, and improved visual feedback. Despite the simplified interface, tactical decisions will still play a decisive role, preserving the strategic depth that players loved about the series.

At the moment, King Art Studios has not announced an exact release date for Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV. However, it is already clear: the project aims to become a worthy continuation of the legendary series, combining the best features of the original with modern gaming standards.
