The director of the new Resident Evil adaptation has ideas for another film in the universe

Zach Cregger, the director behind the upcoming Resident Evil film, told The Playlist that he’s already considering ways to continue the story, though he says it’s too soon to discuss anything concrete.

“I can’t stop thinking about other directions to develop the story. I have ideas, but the film hasn’t even been released yet. We’ll see how it turns out. […] I really want to talk about the film’s ending because there is an important aspect worth discussing.”

Cregger also indicated he does not plan to helm another franchise after this project and urged skeptical fans of the original games to give the movie a chance, telling JoBlo that the film itself should do the talking.

“If watching it doesn’t change your opinion, then so be it. You’ll decide for yourself whether I’m a true Resident Evil fan or not. What else can I say? I think the film will speak for itself.”

The new adaptation is scheduled to premiere on September 18, 2026. Its plot follows Brian, an organ courier who becomes trapped at the center of a viral outbreak and must survive against mutated threats.

The lead role is played by Austin Abrams ("The Instruments"), with Zach Cherry ("Separation"), Jonno Wilson ("Spy Wedding"), Kali Reis ("True Detective"), and others rounding out the cast.
