The creators of Warhammer 40,000 have brought fresh news about the cinematic adaptation of the universe

Mike Flanagan has been brought in to help shape a cinematic adaptation of the Warhammer 40,000 setting for Amazon. His résumé reads like a horror fan’s checklist: he directed Doctor Sleep, Oculus, Silent Hill, and Gerald’s Game, plus several Netflix projects — The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, The Fall of the House of Usher, etc. For this Warhammer effort, Flanagan’s brief is story development; initial outlines are reportedly finished and he’s expected to move into full scriptwriting soon (esp. the cinematic thread).

There were earlier reports about an Amazon/Games Workshop series adaptation. What’s odd now: announcements don’t clearly say whether Flanagan’s work is tied to that series or to a separate film project. Henry Cavill (The Witcher) remains attached to the broader cinematic venture, but whether he’ll appear on-screen is still up in the air.

Additionally, Games Workshop shared a couple of related updates:

• work on a new episode of the 2nd season of the animated anthology series Secret Level is almost complete. Its action takes place in the universe of Warhammer Age of Sigmar;
• work has started on a full animated series based on Warhammer 40,000 about the Deathwatch. The script will be written by John Orloff (Band of Brothers, Legends of the Night Watch), animation will be done by Blur studio, and the premiere will take place on Amazon.
