Board Game "Conspirators" – Become Sherlock for 15 Minutes
The board game "Conspirators" is a compact and affordable intellectual game of deduction and logic from Hobby World, released in late 2025 and quickly gaining popularity among fans of quick mental battles. The action transports you to the era of palace intrigues in the 18th–19th centuries: aristocrats in portraits hide secrets, and players exchange signals to decipher their opponents' codes. No randomness—only observation, analysis, and the ability to bluff.
What's in the Box
- 24 character cards (each with 8 characteristics: gender, hair color, accessories, pose, background, etc.)
- 24 cipher cards (secret rules that determine which characters "match")
- 40 signal tokens
- Notepad for notes + 4 pencils
- Reference sheet and rules
The box is small (approximately 16×24×5 cm), fits even in a backpack. Component quality is good: thick cardboard, pleasant artistic stylization reminiscent of old portraits.
What's the Game About and How to Play?
Each player secretly receives a cipher—a rule defining "ideal" pairs of characters (e.g., alternating genders, same eye color, adjacent initials, or accessories). On the table, a 4×4 or 5×5 grid of portraits is formed. This is a cooperative game where all participants win or lose together. The goal is to collectively decipher each other's hidden codes.
Each player knows their personal cipher—a rule related to the traits on the character cards (e.g., "two female characters in a row"). A common row of cards is formed on the table. On their turn, a player places a new card at the end of the row, but in such a way that the pair of traits formed by the two last cards does not match their own cipher. During the game, players can exchange three cards from their hand once. If a suitable card for a move is not available, the player skips their turn.
After each move, players can make notes in their notepads, eliminating incorrect guesses about others' ciphers. Discussing the ciphers themselves is prohibited, but players can announce how many codes they have already figured out, for example: "I know two players' ciphers."
The game ends when the 12th character card is placed in the row, or if all participants decide early that they already have all the information for a final answer. Then the final check begins. Each player in turn announces their assumptions about the other participants' ciphers. After that, players reveal their secret cipher cards to confirm or refute the guesses. A shared victory is counted only if all ciphers are guessed correctly.
The game's strengths are obvious: pure deduction with no downtime, reminiscent of a hybrid of "Codenames" and "Decrypto," but with portraits and intrigue. The rules are explained in five minutes.
Competitive Mode
This is a competitive mode where everyone plays for themselves. The goal is to be the first to decipher all opponents' secret ciphers. At the start of the game, each player receives two secret ciphers instead of one.
The main difference in gameplay: now a player must place cards so that the pair of traits on the two last cards in the row matches at least one of their own ciphers. If this condition is met, they immediately place their signal token under the card (one token, even if both ciphers match).
As soon as a player believes they have uncovered all opponents' ciphers, they can declare it. From that moment on, they stop taking normal turns: they discard their hand cards into the deck and on each subsequent turn simply take the top card from the deck, setting it aside into their personal victory point pile. However, they continue to place signal tokens when the rules require it.
The game ends after the 12th card is placed, and all remaining players take one final turn.
Verdict
The board game "Conspirators" is perfect for deduction fans, groups, and those who enjoy teasing: "You blinked at the redheads!" Not for dice lovers or epic battles—here, the mind wins, not chance. One of the best compact new releases of 2025—affordable and sharp as a dagger. Take it for gatherings: it will reveal who in the group is the real Sherlock.
