The Occultist Horror Creators Talked About Creating a Scary Atmosphere
The team behind The Occultist explained how they build the game’s sense of dread — not just with jump scares, but with layers you barely notice until something snaps.
Their main aim was sustained tension. To pull that off they pepper the soundscape with tiny, persistent noises (esp. distant creaks, whispers and subtle ambiences) while also using deliberate silence at key beats so a player is forced to sit with their own thoughts. Lighting and color choices are treated like tools too: shifts in hue and shadow slowly squeeze the mood tighter as you move through areas.
Originally the title was slated to launch last year on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, but the devs changed plans. Now the release is expected on April 8th; in the meantime a demo is available if you want to test how well the tension sticks to you.
In earlier comments the creators spoke about the protagonist’s drive and about his main instrument — the pendulum. It isn’t mere props: the pendulum is presented as a genuine mystical artifact, i.e. a mechanic that ties story to gameplay and guides the character through some thorny choices.
They also shared specifics on the setting, an island where traces of a former, livelier town are everywhere. Objects and interiors are designed to feel like echoes of what used to be; small, telling details hint at lives that once mattered. If that sort of slow, unsettling worldbuilding appeals, try the demo and see whether it unnerves you — or not.
