GOG Platform Giving Away Classic Alone in the Dark Trilogy
The digital store GOG has launched a promotion — until February 5th, users can add the full Alone in the Dark trilogy to their library for free. Once claimed, the games will remain in the owners' libraries permanently.
The promotion coincides with the two-year anniversary of the classic games preservation program, within which the studio supports selected titles by adapting them to run on modern hardware.
Alone in the Dark is rightfully considered the progenitor of the survival horror genre. The influence of this series on the industry is hard to overstate: it was this game that introduced key genre-defining features into common use — fixed camera angles and "tank" controls. These mechanics later became the hallmark of Resident Evil. In 2014, Resident Evil director Shinji Mikami admitted that without the experience of Alone in the Dark, his game might have turned out to be a first-person shooter.
The trilogy included in GOG's preservation program is not just a collection of retro games with outdated graphics. It is an important historical artifact that allows one to trace the evolution of the genre and understand how its key mechanics were formed. Today, decades after their release, these games retain value for researchers of gaming culture and connoisseurs of classics.
GOG emphasizes: preserving the legacy of video games is not an automatic process, but the result of targeted work. Behind it are people who care about the history of the industry and those willing to support these efforts. The program, launched in 2024, demonstrates that even old games can remain relevant if effort is put into their adaptation and support.
