Creators of the visual novel Slay the Princess have sold one million copies of their horror game

Developer Black Tabby Games officially announced this week that the game Slay the Princess has surpassed the milestone of one million copies sold. This happened after the release of The Pristine Cut edition on consoles and PC and marks an important moment for the studio.

In a message to fans, co-authors Tony Howard-Arias and Abby Howard candidly shared what this achievement means to them, especially considering the genre’s reputation.

“Visual novels are often underestimated and looked down upon in our industry,” said the developers, noting that reaching one million sales along with positive reviews from critics and viewers was something they “previously thought was impossible.”

Slay the Princess, first released on PC and later expanded to PlayStation and Xbox platforms, is a narrative horror visual novel built around repeated deaths, branching choice options, and reliable perspectives. You must kill the princess trapped in a remote cabin, but every decision changes the story and the characters. The game is fully voiced and features multiple endings designed so that key moments can be replayed without starting over.

The announcement also served as a precursor to what the studio has planned next. The penultimate chapter of Scarlet Hollow will be released in 10 days. Black Tabby Games also announced upcoming products in collaboration with Fangamer, set to launch in late spring or early summer. Specific items were not described, but the studio indicated this is just one of several projects in development.
