Taking Their Word for It? World of Warcraft Composer Midnight Assures There Is No AI Music in the Game
Leo Kaliski, who scored Midnight, told Game Informer there was no generative AI involved in the expansion’s music. He framed it as Blizzard sticking to hands-on composition — making choices they feel are right and, he added with a touch of relief, being able to pay people to do it. He didn’t walk listeners step-by-step through the process; rather, he pushed back on the idea of algorithmic shortcuts, saying the work came from humans, e.g., traditional composing and arrangement rather than automated generation.
Previously, a few Blizzard developers had already made cautious denials about using similar technologies in Overwatch and WoW. At the same time the company hasn’t nailed down a single, company-wide policy on AI; Blizzard president Joanna Faris noted there’s an internal team examining AI’s role — i.e., they’re still figuring out what to allow and how to govern it. Take that as reassurance or wait for a firmer rulebook.
