Another Weird Sony Patent: AI-Powered Podcasts Featuring Game Characters

Sony has registered a patent for a technology that creates personalized, AI-generated podcasts where video game characters serve as hosts.

The patent, titled "LLM-Based Generative Podcasts for Gamers," was approved in late January 2026. It states that modern gaming platforms are unable to provide users with unique and relevant content about events within their ecosystem and proposes a solution to this problem.

According to the description, the system will generate audio news episodes based on a specific player's data. These news segments will be voiced by a character from a game the user recently played. When the console is turned on, a notification about a ready personalized podcast may appear on the screen.

The content of each episode is formed individually based on the user's gaming history and activity. Hosts can be characters from the games they have played. The technology also allows for dialogues between heroes from different game universes.

To create a script, the system analyzes a multitude of data: recent gaming sessions, friend lists, system events, and updates. Based on this information, the artificial intelligence forms an episode and generates speech in a manner characteristic of the chosen character.

In the provided examples, two character-hosts discuss the player's achievements, give recommendations for new games, or advise installing system updates. One character might remark: "Jack Brown just got a trophy in Space Explorers — you should give it a try," to which the other could respond with a touch of irony.

The patent provides for the ability to customize the podcast's theme. The user will be able to choose whether to include information about their own games, recommendations, friends' achievements, or update details. It is noted that jokes referencing the player's own actions can be added to the audio accompaniment.
