Sudden Strike 5 will go to liberate France — the DLC Road to Liberation will be released on July 23
Kalypso Media and Kite Games have set a date for the first major expansion to Sudden Strike 5. The DLC, France: Road to Liberation, lands on July 23 for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
The action is placed in August 1944, amid Operation Dragoon — the Allied landing in southern France. Players get six historical missions in total: Allied operations include an assault on Camel Beach and the push to free Toulon, plus an effort to take Hill 300 and cut off German withdrawal routes. On the German side, missions focus on holding lines and organizing evacuations while under steady Allied pressure.
A new commander joins the roster: Gen. Jean de Lattre de Tassigny. He favors mobile tactics and brings two exclusive doctrine cards that change how you can develop a force (i.e., new strategic paths to try). The expansion also adds over six unit types — e.g., the US destroyer USS Edison, the German remote-controlled SdKfz. 302 Goliath, French infantry contingents, amphibious vehicles, and other combat assets.
Meanwhile, the base game keeps evolving. A free update arriving in early July will add full coop mode; recent patches also introduced small but handy QoL tweaks like pulling single soldiers from trenches, extra loading-screen tips, and more display options.
For context: Sudden Strike 5 is a WWII real-time tactical game from Kite Games that emphasizes realistic battles and army-level tactics rather than base construction. It’s about maneuver, terrain use, and equipment choices — not building a settlement, if that helps set expectations.
