Englishwoman Harasses Steam: Child Advocate Allowed to Sue Valve for £656 Million Over Prices and Commission

Valve will indeed face trial in the UK: at stake is £656 million, which Gabe Newell might have to part with due to Steam's high commission. The company tried to brush off the lawsuit, but the London Competition Appeal Tribunal allowed it to proceed.

The claims in 2024 were brought on behalf of up to 14 million people in the United Kingdom who purchased games or additional content through Steam or other platforms since 2018 by child rights advocate Vicki Shotbolt. Her lawyers will attempt to prove in court that Valve imposes conditions on Steam that prevent publishers from selling products cheaper or earlier on competing platforms. Additionally, after purchasing a game on Steam, users are forced to buy additional content for it only there.

All of this allows the company to charge "unfair and excessive" commissions of up to 30%. For these same 30%, Apple with the App Store and Google with Google Play have already faced their own collective lawsuits in Foggy Albion. And even fellow Americans have been trying to sue Valve for the same reasons since August 2024.
