Unthinkable: Switch 2 in January Lost to PS5 in Sales in the USA

According to Circana's January report, the American video game market continues steady growth, adding 3% and reaching $4.7 billion. The main drivers were subscriptions (+23%) and console hardware (+16%), while accessory sales declined by 5%.

The sales leader in both units and revenue remains the PlayStation 5, although its figures dropped by 17% compared to last January. The second place was confidently taken by the newcomer — Nintendo Switch 2, which not only compensated for the decline of other platforms but also became the key factor in the hardware segment growth up to $248 million. Xbox Series fell by 27%, and the original Switch plummeted by 79%.

In software, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 sets the tone, holding first place for the second month in a row. The top three also include NBA 2K26 and Madden NFL 26. The main leap was made by Final Fantasy VII Remake, rising from 225th position to ninth thanks to its release on Switch 2 and Xbox Series.
