Sony hopes for another Spider-Man movie and has abandoned work on spin-offs
Sony Pictures head Tom Rothman, following the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, spoke about the studio’s next moves. He wouldn’t answer plainly whether Tom Holland will stay on long-term, but hinted the company expects at least one more film with him. At the same time, plans for Spider‑Verse spin‑offs have been put on ice after audiences reacted poorly to those entries.
“I’m not sure those reactions are a fair yardstick. It can feel like shouting into the void. Audiences vote with their feet — and they didn’t warm to these films. That’s the blunt truth,” Rothman said.
He added that Sony never intended to craft its own cinematic universe; the idea was to experiment with stories about other comic characters, but the approach didn’t land with fans. Right now, Sony isn’t developing any external projects.
In the US, Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned a record $360 million in its opening wknd. Domestically it outgrossed Avengers: Endgame, yet on the global tally it trails — $932 million vs. Endgame’s $1.2 billion.
Earlier, director Destin Daniel Cretton shared that he drew inspiration, in part, from Insomniac Games’ Spider‑Man titles. FYI: on July 28 Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PC & PS5 added a suit tied to the upcoming film.
