Sift — the fourth dimension of Minecraft: what is known
Fifteen years after Minecraft first launched, Mojang announced plans to expand the game's universe with a fourth dimension: Sift, also referred to as the "Sieve". The reveal came during the finale of the Minecraft Live stream, which included a brief clip showing a "wandering rabbit" strolling through pink grass beneath a turquoise sky.
When and where will Sift appear
- Minecraft Dungeons 2. The dimension will be added to Mojang's ARPG next week.
- Minecraft (Bedrock and Java). A full release across the main game platforms is scheduled for 2027.
Features of the "Sieve"
Xbox Wire reports that Sift will bring several new mechanics and locales:
- Tides. Environmental tides can influence player characters — they are likely to alter zone access, the availability of resources, or even hero attributes.
- New types of blocks. The dimension will include hazardous blocks that could complicate exploration or introduce tactical considerations.
- Mobs. Sift will be populated by both friendly and hostile creatures. Notably, "wandering rabbits" resemble rabbits but move by walking rather than hopping.
Biomes of the "Sieve"
Two biomes have already been named:
- "Singer's Meadow". A verdant area where plants sprout from red mist, producing striking visual contrasts.
- "Shell". A desert-like zone dotted with peculiar blue walls and enormous hollow fossils, designed to encourage exploration and secret finding.
Significance for the franchise
Introducing a fourth dimension is an uncommon development for Minecraft. Because Sift will first appear in Minecraft Dungeons 2, Mojang appears to be using the more linear ARPG environment to trial its mechanics and setting before integrating the most successful elements into the sandbox experience. This staged approach helps prevent overwhelming the main game while allowing innovation to be tested and refined.
