RUNE Releases Modified Assassin's Creed Mirage With Denuvo and VMProtect Stripped From Executable

A release group calling itself RUNE has published what it describes as an unusual build of Assassin's Creed Mirage, claiming that the Denuvo and VMProtect protections were not simply circumvented but eliminated from the game's executable entirely. The group labels the release a Proof of Concept, framing it as a demonstration that such reworking is technically achievable.

In the accompanying description, RUNE states that its specialists stripped out 34 virtualized VMProtect blocks alongside roughly 200 Denuvo-related blocks, and rebuilt 261 obfuscated code sections. The team further claims to have reconstructed around 25,000 "stolen" function bodies — fragments that the protection mechanism relocates or alters during execution.

The release notes also mention restoring the executable's necessary PE directories, among them exports, imports, exceptions, and TLS. According to RUNE, this work returned the file structure to a state where the protection components are no longer needed to launch the game. The group extended separate thanks to an unnamed specialist who, based on the team's phrasing, was central to the effort.
