Previews for the recently announced retro shooter HUNTDOWN: OVERTIME have started appearing online. So far, the only major gaming outlet to publish a preliminary review is IGN. The opinion on the game is exclusively enthusiastic for now.

The aesthetic of VHS-era action films is wonderfully absurd, and the roguelike elements, absent in the original HUNTDOWN, make the prequel incredibly replayable. It's not just about the procedural generation of enemies and bosses, but also the presence of branching paths in the levels. However, in the short segment of the game the IGN reviewer experienced, all combinations were explored fairly quickly.

The difficulty is reminiscent of the times of Contra and Metal Slug, forcing you to learn patterns, yet it doesn't feel unfairly high. Even during battles with giant bosses. They introduce one gameplay novelty — you can severely cripple an enemy and receive a substantial reward. Or you can kill it and get a smaller prize. This is also a good reason for repeated playthroughs, especially for those who love to explore games inside and out.

There are many perks in HUNTDOWN: OVERTIME, and they allow you to adapt the gameplay to your own style. For example, to focus on melee combat or, conversely, on firing heavy-caliber cannons.

According to the IGN reviewer, he initially planned to spend only 20 minutes in the preview version. But the game was so engaging that he couldn't tear himself away until he had defeated all the bosses in one sitting.

We remind you that HUNTDOWN: OVERTIME is currently announced only for PC. The shooter's release in Steam Early Access is scheduled for the second quarter of 2026. The game will have a Russian text translation.
