Resident Evil Requiem: Capcom Producer Hints at Hidden Meaning Behind the Title

The ninth main installment in the Resident Evil series now has an official title: Resident Evil Requiem. Capcom has moved away from traditional numbering, making the naming convention less straightforward — following Resident Evil Village (the eighth entry), the new subtitle has sparked widespread speculation among fans.

Jun Takeuchi, the franchise's producer, offered a partial explanation in an interview with a special issue of a Japanese magazine celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Biohazard series. According to Takeuchi, the word "Requiem" was not chosen solely for its literal meaning.

"The letters that make up the word REQUIEM contain not only RE (response), but also Q (question). In other words, this 'Requiem' carries within it both a question and an answer. I will definitely explain what this means, but later," the producer stated.

The comment has done little to quiet the community's curiosity. Many believe Takeuchi is intentionally withholding details, as a full explanation of the "question and answer" concept could spoil major plot points. Speculation has been further fueled by the confirmation that a substantial story expansion is already planned for Resident Evil Requiem — one that will seemingly address the story's central mysteries.

Online discussion has also turned to how the new game's narrative might connect to other Capcom projects. One prominent theory suggests the title's hidden meaning could tie into the Resident Evil – Code: Veronica remake, which is reportedly in active development.

Capcom representatives have asked fans to remain patient. The publisher also noted that it has a clear strategic plan in place for after the current remake production cycle concludes.
