Quantic Dream is shutting down the online game Spellcasters Chronicles. Development of Star Wars Eclipse is on schedule
Quantic Dream buries the online game Spellcasters Chronicles. Development of Star Wars Eclipse is on track
In February, the studio Quantic Dream launched the multiplayer action-strategy Spellcasters Chronicles in early access on Steam. It turned out to be a short run — servers will be shut down on June 19, less than four months after release. Anyone who paid for the game will get a full refund.
The team said they were trying to explore “new creative territories.” That intention aside, the title failed to draw enough players to justify ongoing support; peak CCU was only 888 people, by the numbers.
Because of the cancellation, the studio is reorganizing. The statement implies some folks who worked on the project will be moved to other teams, while others who can’t be placed will lose their jobs — awkward, inevitable choices in this case.
Quantic Dream insists these shifts won’t derail the action-adventure Star Wars Eclipse; development, they say, continues as planned.
For context, Spellcasters Chronicles pitched wizard duels in a 3v3 format. Mages could fly and summon creatures (e.g., skeletons up to dragons). The plan was for each season to put a consequential choice to the community that would alter gameplay and the lore. A bold idea that, sadly, didn’t find its crowd.
