Highguard was planned to be released as a "shadow drop," but Kili spoiled everything
The co-founders of Wildlight studio admitted that the announcement of the shooter Highguard at The Game Awards went poorly. According to them, the trailer was too entertaining and did not reveal the essence of the game, which caused misunderstanding among the audience.
Originally, the team planned a surprise release following the model of Apex Legends, but changed plans after receiving an invitation from Geoff Keighley. After the showcase, the game disappeared from the information space for a long time, which increased doubts.
Despite the criticism, the release took place: the peak concurrent online in Steam exceeded 97,000 players, although reviews remain negative.
A very telling opinion came from one of the players, which gathered over 4,500 "likes":
“I mostly just feel sorry for the developers. The game clearly wasn’t developed or prepared for this level of scrutiny. Everything is vague and unclear. The map is the size of Latvia, but you only have 3 players, so most of the time you’re running around the map looking for something to kill. They say it’s a dynamic shooter, but the trader makes you farm rare earth metals to buy stuff. The characters are deeply bland and uninteresting, and the art design is like all the cool ideas were thrown into a cauldron — what if magic really existed? What if there were weapons? What if you could ride a bear? What if Excalibur existed? What if there was a giant siege tower? The game is neither fun nor interesting. And yet, it’s free.”
