Not just a trailer: the GTA 6 showcase on Netflix will last 20 minutes, but fans are still angry that they have to pay for the ad

Rockstar Games has finally announced the next major showcase for GTA 6: the video Grand Theft Auto 6: "Extended Look," set to premiere on Netflix on August 27 at 22:00. According to Netflix support, the presentation will run about 20 min — so think more than a teaser, less than a full deep dive. Instead of the expected buzz, though, the news was met with a wave of criticism from the community.

The snag: the "Extended Look" appears on Netflix first, and you need an active sub to catch it live. On YouTube and Rockstar’s site it’s scheduled for 4 a.m. — roughly 6 hrs later. Many players read this as a push to make people pay to view what is essentially a paid game’s promo; GTA 6 itself is already priced at $80 (or $100 for the "Ultimate Edition").

Forcing fans to get a Netflix sub just to see a promo? That's a pretty shameless money move.

Basically, you're expected to pay ~$8–15 to watch an ad — no thanks.

A lot of users flagged the irony: Rockstar’s games lampoon corporate avarice, yet here the company adopts a tactic that looks, to some, uncomfortably like that same behavior.

There are also practical worries. Can Netflix handle a crush of viewers all at once? Will DRM block screenshots and screen recordings for the first few hrs, stopping streamers and casual watchers from sharing first impressions? Those possibilities have people nervous about access and reaction speed.

This move follows other contentious choices by Rockstar — anger over GTA Online monetization and the lack of a physical disc in retail copies, e.g. The Netflix tie-in only amplifies talk about hyper-monetization from parts of the fanbase.

The agreement is done and the showcase will air as scheduled. Whether the 20-min segment justifies the fuss or quiets critics is another question — we'll see after it drops.
