New York Authorities Want to Sue Valve Over Loot Boxes in Games

New York authorities have filed a lawsuit against Valve for "organizing illegal gambling" that violates state laws. According to Attorney General Letitia James, loot boxes, which encourage gamers to spend money for a chance to win rare items, are comparable to a casino.

"Such mechanics can lead to addiction and the formation of problematic behavior in teenagers. Those who have not reached the age of majority have often used their parents' bank cards," the statement says.

As a result, Valve is required to abandon loot boxes, as well as return illegally obtained revenues and pay a fine. No response comments have been received so far.

Meanwhile, the Steam store owned by the company continues to host the "Games to Be" festival with hundreds of demos for games that have not yet been released. It will last until March 2.
