New World MMO servers to be shut down in January 2027
Due to a large-scale restructuring at Amazon in October, the company decided that further development of the MMO New World was not feasible. The project is no longer receiving content updates and will soon close its doors for good.
According to a message from the developers, the New World servers will be shut down in a year, on January 31, 2027. After that, it will no longer be possible to log into the game. Sales of in-game currency will stop on July 20.
The MMO has already been removed from sale on all platforms, but those who purchased New World earlier can still install it and play until the above date. The tenth season, which started in October 2025, will remain active in the game until its demise. As a reminder, due to the upcoming closure of the MMO, the Nighthaven and Rise of the Angry Earth packs have been made free.
Whether jokingly or seriously, Alistair McFarlane, COO of Facepunch Studios, the team responsible for Rust, offered to buy New World from Amazon for $25 million. "Games shouldn't die," he tweeted, adding that the company should not shut down New World, but hand it over to the community. So that people could host it themselves. "In the hands of a dedicated community, the game will live forever," — says McFarlane.
As a reminder, New World was released in 2021 and got off to a very strong start — on Steam alone, peak online numbers reached almost a million players. However, it failed to stay at the top of the MMO charts, and after a few months, its average online numbers dropped to a few tens of thousands of gamers. The project was gently relaunched under the name New World: Aeternum, with several free weekends and expansions rolled out, but this did not help it get out of the quagmire.
