Netflix and Take-Two Aim to Release BioShock Film Adaptation Alongside New Game
Back in early 2022, employees of 2K, Take-Two Interactive, and Netflix announced plans to create a film adaptation of BioShock under the direction of Francis Lawrence, the director of I Am Legend and The Hunger Games. Since then, the project has largely stalled, prompting producer Roy Lee to comment on the lengthy delay.
According to Lee, this is due to Lawrence's involvement with other films. In a brief conversation with Collider journalists, he all but explicitly stated that BioShock could become the director's next major project after he completes post-production on The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. This is reportedly influenced by the involved companies' desire to time the film's premiere with the release of the next game in the series:
We would have made BioShock a few years ago, but then other projects came up: The Long Walk and the Hunger Games prequel, which is coming out this December. We're just waiting for Lawrence to finish post-production, because he'll be working on that film at least until September, and then he'll return to The Hunger Games. I know that Netflix and Take-Two are very eager for this film because they want its premiere to coincide with the release of the new game. Roy Lee
Speaking of the game. BioShock 4 has been in development since 2019 by the team at Cloud Chamber. Unfortunately, difficulties arose during the process, leading to a reorganization of the team under new leadership by Rod Fergusson. In the past, Fergusson managed to pull BioShock Infinite out of development hell. Whether he can repeat that success remains to be seen in the future.
