Nathan Fillion Will Continue Upholding the Law: "The Rookie" Renewed for Season 9

The police drama “The Rookie” starring Nathan Fillion has been renewed for season 9, the announcement arriving just before the season eight finale. On ABC it now sits behind "Grey’s Anatomy" and "NYPD Blue" in terms of run length — not the flashiest accolade, but notable all the same. The show also found an unexpected surge with younger viewers, esp. those on TikTok (e.g., short clips and memes helped spread it).

The creator, writer, and producer is Alexi Hawley (i.e., the series' main architect). The current season premiered on ABC on January 6.

Returning to their roles are Fillion (John Nolan), Mekia Cox (Nyla Harper), Alyssa Diaz (Angela Lopez), Richard T. Jones (Wade Grey), Melissa O’Neil (Lucy Chen), Eric Winter (Tim Bradford), Jenna Dewan (Bailey Nune), Sean Ashmore (Wesley Evers), Lisset Chavez (Selina Huerta), Bridget Regan (Monica Stevens), Derek Austin (Miles Penn), and others.

A spin-off, The Rookie: North, is also in development; the lead has been cast for Jay Ellis. No final dates yet, so fans will have to wait and see what shape that branch of the franchise takes.
