Multiplayer in STALKER 2 is not canceled – developers confirmed work on a free update
GSC Game World says a free multiplayer update for STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl is still in the works — Evgeny and Maria Grigorovich told Insider Gaming this at gamescom 2026.
The multiplayer promise goes back to before launch; the official STALKER 2 site even still mentions a post-release free update. Two years on, however, that mode hasn’t shown up. The studio’s explanation: priorities shifted to polishing the base game and producing more single-player material. Recent evidence of that focus includes the Cost of Hope expansion (out earlier this month) and a second big add-on currently being made — which, they say, left practically no room for multiplayer work.
No release window was offered. Work on the mode is ongoing, according to the team, but they’re spread across several lines of development — some of which remain unannounced.
A thorny technical question looms for the PC crowd: heavy mod use complicates any multiplayer plan. Local mods (e.g., custom assets, gameplay tweaks) tend to make peer-to-peer play impossible without a dedicated, dev-side solution; that’s the core concern players keep raising.
GSC hasn’t detailed the mode’s shape yet. Will it be cooperative Zone exploration or more PvP-style encounters in the vein of the original trilogy? At this point, both possibilities are still on the table.
The game itself — STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl — is available on PC and Xbox Series, and it’s in the Game Pass library.
