The AMD BC-250 began life as a mining-oriented board, not a gaming platform. In 2022 ASRock deployed these cards in 12-board mining rigs, built around selected Ariel/Oberon silicon that is roughly comparable in capability to the PlayStation 5. After the collapse of the crypto-mining market, individual BC-250 boards started appearing on the secondhand market for about $100–120; today a bare board typically sells for roughly $170, not including cooling, a case, or a power supply. Enthusiasts have since pushed the hardware well beyond its original configuration — unlocking up to 40 physical RDNA 2 compute units on compatible units (the stock configuration is 24) and using firmware mods to enable all eight Zen 2 CPU cores rather than the factory six.

Attention has now turned to upscaling performance: the FSR code has been optimized for these boards. Using version v4.0.0-rc9, developers report a substantial reduction in the processing cost of FSR 4.1.1. Measured on the BC-250, the upscaler runtime in Quality mode at 2560×1440 with a native resolution of 1706×960 fell from 11.51 ms to 5.92 ms. At 4K the runtime went from 25.72 ms down to 12.08 ms, and at 1080p it improved from 7.13 ms to 3.93 ms. These figures refer specifically to the upscaler runtime, not total frame time, and controlled comparisons showed the output images were bitwise identical after the optimization.

The optimized DLL produced by the developer can be injected via OptiScaler or used in games that include a native FidelityFX implementation. All testing so far was carried out on BC-250 hardware running Linux with the standard Mesa stack and GE-Proton; Windows, other GPUs, and frame generation scenarios have not yet been evaluated. The developer suggests that around 1440p is a practical upper limit for this setup, since FSR 4 remains fairly demanding even after these improvements and 4K still proves heavy.

The broader BC-250 community has continued to expand the project’s scope. Contributors have produced more than 145 different case and enclosure designs, and development work now spans firmware, GPU control, memory, audio, telemetry, Bazzite, ROCm, and the unlocking of CPU cores and GPU compute units. What began as a series of cryptocurrency-mining boards is progressively being turned by hobbyists into compact, fully functional gaming systems running Linux.
