Modder Turns Red Dead Redemption 2 into 'Almost Pokémon'
A modder has turned Red Dead Redemption 2 into 'almost Pokémon'. The author of unusual and intentionally absurd mods, known as Blurbs, showed how the Rockstar western could be remade into a game about catching and battling animals.
In the new video, Blurbs step-by-step demonstrates the process of creating the mod. First, the main character learns to throw an 'Arthurball' — a local analogue of a Pokéball. Then, the author makes the game 'catch' wild beasts and adds a screen with a roster of captured creatures and their move sets.
Blurbs didn't stop there. He implemented a dueling system where the player can point at an NPC and challenge them to a battle. The camera then switches to a battle format in the style of Pokémon — two 'trainers' and their pets face off.
The author himself admits that he usually doesn't release his work to the public. According to him, the mods are held together by a bunch of workarounds and several programs at once. However, he does plan to release this project after some code cleanup. The mod works in conjunction with streaming software and requires OBS to be installed, even if playing without a stream.
Interestingly, the mod touches on the franchises of Nintendo and Rockstar — companies known for their categorical stance on fan creativity. Which of the multi-million dollar corporations will come for Blurbs first? Perhaps they will start fighting each other and forget about the modder? Time will tell.
Previously, Blurbs had already turned Red Dead Redemption 2 into parodic versions of other games — from Katamari, where everything sticks to Arthur, to Mortal Kombat and Super Monkey Ball. His list of experiments also includes Grand Theft Auto V with a 'realistic' twist: there, NPCs can deliberately throw themselves under the player's car and then sue them.
