Miyazaki Dispels Fans' Fantasies About George Martin's Strong Influence on Elden Ring's Final Lore
In a recent Elden Ring update, Hidetaka Miyazaki shed light on the game's world creation process and explained how far the final product deviated from the initial ideas of writer George R. R. Martin, who was brought in to work on the project's lore.
Miyazaki confirmed that Martin was indeed involved in shaping the Elden Ring universe at the earliest stage of development. The writer laid the foundational mythologies and backstories of key characters, providing the team with a powerful starting impulse.
However, as development progressed, the studio charted a course toward independently crafting the story and its narrative delivery. According to the project leader, Martin's initial work had to be significantly adapted to fit the specifics of a video game. As a result, many lore elements underwent substantial changes and in the final version of the game, they appear very differently than originally conceived.
This approach, as Miyazaki explained, was driven by the unique features of video game storytelling. In Elden Ring, players learn about the world fragmentarily: through environmental details, architectural design, encounters with enemies, and scattered narrative clues. This creates a unique atmosphere of exploration, where each discovery becomes a building block in a personal world view.
The main task for the developers, Miyazaki emphasized, was to seamlessly link the map and level design with the narrative. The team aimed to guide players without depriving them of the freedom to interpret: everyone pieces together their own version of events from the fragments of information. This balance between guidance and freedom became the cornerstone of the narrative in Elden Ring.
George Martin himself has not publicly commented on how much of his initial ideas survived in the final version of the game. However, he has spoken positively about Elden Ring as a whole, though it seems he hasn't personally played the game.
