Quest 3 Mixed Reality Headsets to Receive Innovative Features
The developer company has begun public beta testing of an innovative feature for the Quest 3 mixed reality headset. Developers have created virtual input tools—Surface Keyboard and Surface Touchpad—that allow any flat surface to be turned into an interactive work area.
The technology's operating principle is based on using the headset's built-in cameras. They track the position of the user's hands, allowing a table or other flat surface to become a workspace for text input and navigation. This solution aims to eliminate one of the key inconveniences of virtual reality—difficulties with typing.
Existing virtual keyboards in VR have significant drawbacks. Since they "float" in space, the user lacks tactile feedback. Furthermore, prolonged typing in this format quickly leads to fatigue. Surface Keyboard offers a more comfortable option: it maintains the familiar hand position, as when working with a regular keyboard on a desk.
However, experts express certain doubts regarding the practical usefulness of the virtual touchpad. Many VR users note that navigation using gestures in space proves to be more intuitive than simulating finger sliding on a virtual surface on a table.
Currently, the feature is only available for the Quest 3 headset—other models from the company do not support it. The company has not yet announced official release dates for the stable version of the update.
