Konami will make PlayStation 5 great again. Probably

Recently, Sony has been making efforts to revive interest in the PlayStation 5 in the Japanese market, where sales have left much to be desired. One of the important steps was the release in November of a new, affordable version exclusively for the domestic market, but when it comes to software, according to gaming journalist Kieshi Tane, the key to revitalizing the PS5 in the domestic market may be Konami.

During the recent Sony State of Play presentation held on February 13, Konami was on stage for fifteen minutes, making several important announcements. In particular, the company announced the original JRPG Rev. NOiR, created by Nobuki Kadoi, the author of Drakengard 2, which is currently announced only for the PS5. Similarly, the new Silent Hill: Townfall currently appears to be a PS5 console exclusive, as only PC and PS5 versions are confirmed on the official website.

While major Japanese gaming companies like Square Enix have struggled due to exclusive agreements and ultimately abandoned them, Tane suggests that Konami is in a unique position to maintain its current relationship with Sony, thereby continuously creating incentives for gamers to buy the PS5.

He explains that Konami’s gaming business is not only relatively small but also has established sources of steady revenue, such as eFootball, the Powerful Pro Baseball series, and the Momotaro Dentetsu series (whose total sales have exceeded 18.9 million copies as of August 2025).

Analyzing Konami's latest financial reports, the company announced record-high gaming revenues for the past three quarters, with eFootball consistently cited as the main sales driver (the game’s downloads have exceeded 950 million as of January 2026).

Thanks to such powerful hits and regular re-releases of classics from its catalog, Konami can afford to release some of its most attractive games as timed exclusives for the PS5, thereby promoting the console’s popularity.
