According to the insider, the new installment of Age of Empires is being developed on a customized Unreal Engine to meet modern standards. The project is overseen by the World's Edge studio.

Simultaneously, Microsoft is reviving the StarCraft universe. The nearest project will be a third-person shooter in the spirit of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, although the ultimate goal remains a new classic RTS.

Despite the genre's lack of popularity, Microsoft views RTS as a strategic direction for strengthening its position in the PC market and the Xbox ecosystem.
