"It will never be like before" — as Lenovo claims, RAM will no longer get cheaper. Ever
Lenovo told attendees at a recent conference that the jump in RAM and storage prices isn't a blip — it's likely to persist. According to company reps, DRAM and NAND prices won't fall back to 2025 levels; the higher pricing is expected to become the "new normal" through at least 2030 (≈4 yrs.). Micron and SK Hynix are increasing capacity, but shipments still trail demand. Much of the pressure comes from the rapid expansion of AI: data centers running large language models are consuming a very large share of memory chips from Samsung, Micron, and SK Hynix, and suppliers have been prioritizing those high-tech orders over consumer channels. The practical effect is straightforward and painful for shoppers — despite local fluctuations, PCs and parts are costing end users hundreds of dollars more than they did last year.
