Insider Confirms Age of Empires' Return on Unreal Engine and on a Grand Scale

Journalist and Microsoft insider Jez Corden has shared details about the future game in the Age of Empires series. He confirmed that the new title will be developed on Unreal Engine, something previously hinted at by job postings. The popular engine was chosen because the studio's own technologies were limiting the creators of Age of Empires IV and their long-term needs.

For the next installment of Age of Empires, the Unreal Engine will be used by World’s Edge Studios at a fundamental level in creating the game. However, another studio will help bring the development to completion.

Unfortunately, the journalist had to disappoint fans — an announcement for the next Age of Empires should not be expected anytime soon. Corden doesn't even know the setting of the upcoming title or its release timeframe.

However, he emphasized that the Age of Empires series remains extremely important for Microsoft, especially in light of expanding the Xbox ecosystem's presence on PC. And the franchise's return will happen "on a grand scale."

Currently, the creators of Age of Empires are also updating two games in the series simultaneously. These are Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition and Age of Empires IV. They are receiving fresh patches and paid DLC with new content. For example, in the fall, the remaster of the second part was supplemented with DLC about Alexander the Great. And in the "fourth" installment, Eastern civilizations with unique mechanics have appeared.
