Fantasy CRPG Esoteric Ebb in the Spirit of Disco Elysium Launches March 3rd

Esoteric Ebb is an amusing isometric RPG that places player freedom of action at its core. The project is being developed by Christoffer Bodegård with support from indie publisher Raw Fury. During IGN Fan Fest 2026, the creators showed a fresh trailer and announced the game's launch date. The adventure begins next week.

The story of Esoteric Ebb will transport you to a fantasy world where mythological creatures sell newspapers and ideologies eclipse the ravings of dead gods. At the center of the plot is the Priest—a failed bureaucrat from the Palace and an expert on esoteric events. Together with his goblin companion Snell, he arrives in the city of Norvik to investigate an explosion at a tea shop. But this case will ultimately lead the Priest to a secret political conspiracy.

Esoteric Ebb features numerous branching quests with open endings, over 70 characters, 30 spells borrowed from the fifth edition of D&D, and more. Gamers will roll dice while arguing with voices in their own head, engage in turn-based battles, wander through a city on the brink of its first-ever elections, and try to become a true hero. Or spectacularly fail the entire investigation. The choice is yours.

The "Quest Tree" deserves special mention, which intertwines the quest log, skill tree, and thought map. Each quest branch can take root in the protagonist's consciousness and change the gameplay style with game-altering abilities.

The main sources of inspiration for Esoteric Ebb are cited as the cult classics Planescape Torment and Disco Elysium. In Bodegård's creation, everything is dynamic, tied to narrative variables and player choices. An average playthrough takes about 25 hours, but for those who like to dig deeper, the title offers up to 50 hours of gameplay.

You can unravel the tangle of mysteries in Esoteric Ebb on Steam starting March 3rd (at 8:00 PM Moscow time). English is the only supported language listed. You can try the game early via a demo version, with progress carrying over to the full release.

Development of Esoteric Ebb began in 2018 as Bodegård's side project, and by around 2024, the game had secured a publisher.
