Amazon Abandons Publishing Open-World Racing Game from Forza Horizon Developers

Following a major shake-up in the fall of 2025, Amazon Game Studios continues to divest non-performing assets. This time, the company's executives have turned their attention to an agreement with Maverick Games to publish an open-world racing game. Amazon has changed its mind about pursuing this, so the developers are now searching for a new partner.

According to a statement from Amazon, the company is now shifting its focus to projects "where its strengths and scale can have the greatest impact." These include the relaunch of the cloud gaming platform Luna and the partnership with Crystal Dynamics on the Tomb Raider franchise.

"We have high regard for the team at Maverick Games and the unique, story-driven racing game they are building," Amazon conveyed, wishing the studio great success in the future.

Maverick Games thanked the corporation for the collaboration and assured that development of the racing title continues, with negotiations already underway with potential partners.

Production of our debut project is proceeding exactly according to plan. We are currently in discussions with potential partners who share our long-term vision for this intellectual property. We look forward to sharing more details later this year. Studio co-founder Mike Brown and its head Harinder Sangha.

Recall that Maverick Games was formed in 2022 by industry veterans who worked on the Forza Horizon series. The team is working on an open-world racing game with a focus on story. It is planned for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series.

As for Amazon, it has significantly scaled back its gaming industry activities recently and offloaded several projects. For example, it announced the closure of the MMO New World and the platformer King of Meat, and also sold the MOBA March of Giants and the studio responsible for it to colleagues at Ubisoft.
