Gamers criticized the start of marathon season 2 for technical issues

Yesterday, Marathon (2026) flipped the switch on a free access week and rolled out the second season called “TWILIGHT”. Right away, a chunk of players ran into technical issues: many couldn't log in for several hrs, and those who did often got kicked mid-match. Bungie took the servers down for a time — devs later apologized — and handed out 7x sponsorship packs to everyone affected.

The peak online player count on Steam at the season launch rose to just over 40 thousand, then interest tapered off after that spike.

Recall that along with the second season in Marathon, these features appeared:

  • the “Night Swamp” zone;
  • a new Runner shell;
  • new weapons;
  • Cradle, a new system for customizing shell characteristics;
  • accelerated progress in factions, and much more.

Bungie also made their extraction shooter free for one week until June 9. Players will be able to try the new mode “Sponsored Survival”. (Free wk — try it before 9 June.)
