Modern video games are facing unexpected competitors in the battle for users' attention and wallets. According to a report by Epyllion, men aged 18–45 are increasingly preferring to launch gambling games, chat with AI bots, or adult content on platforms like OnlyFans instead of the latest AAA release.
In the US alone, spending on these seven alternative areas grew by $31.6 billion—more than double the increase in gaming expenditures.
The situation is exacerbated by the dominance of old live services like Fortnite and Minecraft: it's almost impossible for new projects to break through to the audience. Analysts advise publishers to learn from competitors: make games more lively and add character interactions.
