Game Director of No Rest for the Wicked Explains Why Games Like Baldur's Gate 3 Need Early Access
Moon Studios head Thomas Mahler believes that complex games like No Rest for the Wicked or Baldur’s Gate III need early access. According to him, this is necessary due to their scale. Mahler assured that money is not the driving factor here.
The complexity of such games simply doesn't allow developers to create them while shut away in their own offices. Studios simply don't have enough staff to catch and fix all the bugs in time.
At the same time, Mahler acknowledged that there have been cases where developers used early access to deceive players. He urged trusting major studios and teams that already have full releases under their belts.
Recall that No Rest for the Wicked has been in early access since April 18, 2024. Currently on Steam, the game has 79% positive reviews, and sales have exceeded 1 million copies. In January, it broke its record for peak concurrent players. This was influenced by the introduction of a cooperative mode and free weekends.
Previously, a modder added content to Baldur’s Gate 3 that was cut during its early access period. Currently, the mod includes over a hundred interactions with various characters and more than a thousand voiced lines. Its creator promises to expand the collection in the future.
