Recently, Square Enix presented an extended teaser trailer for Evercold — the sixth global expansion for the MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV. The reveal included new addon details and a Switch 2 release date; some of the announcements felt like small surprises, others were the sort of expected updates long-time players had been guessing at.

About the Switch 2 port: Final Fantasy XIV will land there on August 4. Playing on Nintendo’s hybrid console needs a separate monthly subscription (yes, even if you use an existing account). Nintendo Switch Online isn’t required. Current FFIV clients get a 50% discount, and a free trial will be provided on Switch 2. Warning: the install is big — 117.2 GB of free space (i.e., plan accordingly).

As for Evercold, the expansion is due in early 2027 and brings the following:

  • The first story chapter of the global "Godless Realms Saga."
  • A looser approach to exploration — the story structure has been tweaked so you can pick which regions to visit first. Enemy levels will scale automatically to match the player, keeping encounters relevant.
  • Emote remapping for more personalization; this will expand over time (e.g., more slots or options later on).
  • Deeper character customization: a larger color palette, more precise eye/lip controls, and extra details such as eye shadows.
  • A new raid series, Ghosts of Desire — a crossover with Neon Genesis Evangelion, created with Khara and director/animator Mahiro Maeda involved.
  • A crossover with the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy via the Beyond the Lifestream raid series.
  • A fresh tank job called Bastion — think heavy-hitting shield warfare, wielding two large shields. Another ranged DPS job is in development and will be unveiled at Tokyo Game Show.
  • New zones: Water Realm Naglfar, Fire Realm Khringhorni, plus the city Fargart.
  • A revamped chocobo system: breeding/raising is improved and chocobos can now be summoned to assist in dungeons.
  • Better player matchmaking.
  • A new Gold Saucer mini-game named Keybound Brawler.

They also touched on the PlayStation 4 situation. Good news first: Evercold will be released on PS4. Caveat: Square Enix says the PS4’s abilities are nearing their limit; official support is slated to end after update 8.3, roughly two years from now (~2 yrs).

Right now, Final Fantasy XIV is available on PC (Steam), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series. Note: no Russian localization is provided.
