Expanding the Character Roster in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds
Following the successful launch of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, which surpassed 1 million copies sold and entered Steam's top 100 for 2025, Sonic Team has announced plans to expand the game's roster of heroes. In an interview with MCV, studio head Takashi Iizuka shared details about the future work on the game.
Iizuka stated that the character list will be expanded not only with classic heroes from the Sega universe but also with characters from comics, animated series, and representatives from third-party franchises. The addition of new participants will be part of seasonal content—regular updates will help maintain audience interest over a long period.
The team is paying serious attention to the selection of candidates. Each new character must not only be recognizable but also fit harmoniously into the world of Sonic, align with the spirit of the franchise, and integrate organically with the racing gameplay.
The studio is placing a special emphasis on lesser-known heroes from the expanded Sonic universe. Specifically, this includes characters from IDW Publishing comics and various TV series. According to Iizuka, the team's goal is to reflect all eras of Sonic in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds and delight fans with both familiar faces and unexpected newcomers.
