Diablo 5 returns procedural generation and abandons the open world of diablo 4

Blizzard has confirmed that Diablo 5 is in development and that the next installment will abandon the fixed open-world map used in Diablo 4. Revealed during a game design panel at BlizzCon 2026, the studio said the franchise will return to the procedural generation approach that defined earlier entries — and that this will apply to both dungeons and the overworld.

Senior Producer Tiffany Wat summarized the change in design direction:

In Diablo 5, we are bringing back procedural worlds. Both in the dungeons and in the overworld. This means that revisiting an already cleared area will not give the player any advantage. Knowledge of routes, landmarks, and elite monster locations will no longer work after each new run.

If I return to a region I’ve already been to, all the information I got yesterday — the path I found, the landmark I moved toward, how to fight those elite monsters — none of that will help me today.

Blizzard described the core philosophy behind the change as "constant discovery," with the intention that players should never feel fully safe or able to rely on memorized routes.

The only thing hidden behind the fog of war is even more questions.

Wat also outlined the bleak state of the game world: every city in Sanctuary has been destroyed, and the environment has become an extremely harsh place to survive.

Historically, the series made heavy use of random dungeon generation until Diablo 4, which introduced a fully explorable and markable map. That departure divided the community: some players welcomed the ability to master the world, while others missed the unpredictability of procedural layouts.
