Epic Games Store Boss Won't Overthrow Steam — The Store Just Wants a Bigger Market Share

The Vice President and General Manager of Epic Games Store, Steve Allison, explained that the store's goal is not the "overthrow of Steam." The launcher is following its own development path and, in the manager's opinion, is creating healthy competition for Valve's platform — which has directly influenced the growth of the PC gaming market as a whole.

Although Epic Games Store is now available on smartphones, Allison remains committed to the desire to capture a "sufficient share of the PC market." The businessman emphasizes that 60% of EGS users are also present on Steam. At the same time, many gamers buy only one game a year — and the Epic Games Store must make the user consider making that purchase here, and not somewhere else.

Currently, Epic Games Store is focusing on crossovers with Fortnite and developing a "social structure" around the store. Its functionality will only expand this year and in the following years.

Also, Epic Games in its 2025 report announced record figures. The store added 1300 new games, including major releases from GTA Online to Marvel Rivals. Another record was the time spent on partner games — 2.78 billion hours. Overall, Epic Games Store managed to reach an audience of 78 million monthly active PC players. And over all 12 months of 2025, gamers spent more than 6.65 billion hours on games from the store (including Fortnite). Also, during free giveaways, 662 million game copies were distributed.

Currently, Epic Games Store developers are working on numerous improvements that will appear in the store this summer. For example, players will be able to form communities. In the fall, cross-platform libraries with games on PC and smartphones are expected.
