Todd Howard explained why the second season of Fallout went to New Vegas, even though the showrunners initially planned to start with the iconic location. According to the executive producer, he advised the writers to hold off and first "lay the foundation" of the story in California.

The events of Fallout: New Vegas turned out to be a minefield for adaptation—the plot is too multi-layered, with different ending options, factional conflicts, and characters beloved by millions. The challenge was to not contradict any of the game's endings while carefully moving the story forward. The showrunners called this approach the "fog of war": the canon isn't strictly fixed, and events are presented from different perspectives.

Howard admitted he was worried about the second season due to the "sophomore slump" effect, but viewers warmly received the continuation.
