CD Projekt RED creates deep and emotional relationships in The Witcher 4
The developers have confirmed that romantic storylines are returning in the new installment of the series, but the studio wants to push them further than before. Game director Sebastian Kalemba argued romance has always mattered to CD Projekt RED's storytelling, and in The Witcher 4 those relationships should be very engaging and very meaningful. Executive producer Małgorzata Mitrega warned romance won't be added "just for the sake of having relationship options." Her point: make it feel like a natural outgrowth of story and character growth, not filler.
From the dev comments, players can expect:
- deeper and longer-lasting relationships instead of fleeting romances;
- emotional consequences of choices made;
- more attention to Ciri's personal life;
- more complex and mature relationships, inspired by Ciri’s portrayal in Andrzej Sapkowski’s books.
Given CD Projekt's prior runs with romance (TW3, Cyberpunk 2077), the studio seems intent on making these relationships matter to plot and character—w/ the usual caveat that execution will decide whether it lands.
