More details about Fable from yesterday's presentation: companion dog, world size, and Switch 2 version

New details about the project, scheduled for release in fall 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series, were revealed during the Xbox Developer Direct.

The reboot of Fable by Playground Games will not feature a canine companion — the iconic element familiar to players from previous installments of the series. Studio General Manager Ralph Fulton stated this directly in response to fan questions. He noted that the team understands the importance of this character to the community but reminded everyone that in the original trilogy, the dog only appeared in the second game.

The story will begin with the hero's childhood in a village, which a mysterious stranger will turn to stone, setting the plot in motion. Players will explore a seamless open world with forests, cities, and villages where they can purchase real estate and businesses, influencing the economy. Also announced are a moral choice system that determines reputation and the fate of the world, deep social interactions including marriage and children, and a dynamic combat system with magic.

Fulton emphasized that the studio, having received all the archives from the series' creators at Lionhead, consciously chose not to copy them, aiming to create a game with its own character while preserving the franchise's signature British humor and fairy-tale, rather than epic, tone.

According to insiders, a release of Fable on the prospective Nintendo Switch 2 console has not yet been confirmed but is being considered by Microsoft as a possible future step.
