Western Digital Unveils Strategy for Future HDD Development
Western Digital has presented its strategy for hard drive development, moving away from direct competition with SSDs. Instead of universal solutions, engineers are proposing two specialized directions: one for maximum speed and another for minimal power consumption.
The primary focus is on the High-Bandwidth HDD family. Its goal is to increase throughput by 2-4 times using two technologies: parallel operation of multiple read heads and a Dual-Pivot system with two independent actuators in a single housing. Their combined use in the future could potentially quadruple performance.
The second direction is Power-Optimized HDD for "active cold" storage. These drives are optimized for low-intensity workloads and consume 20% less energy compared to conventional HDDs, offering a cost-effective alternative to expensive SSDs.
The strategy's success will depend on price. If the new drives maintain a significant cost advantage in their respective niches, HDD technology will remain in demand. The first samples for testing are planned for release in 2027.
