Analyst: Forza Horizon 5 Sales on PS5 Exceed 5 Million Copies

In late April of last year, Forza Horizon 5 broke free from its native PC and Xbox platforms and made a significant splash on PlayStation 5. According to analysts' estimates, the fifth installment of the racing "Horizon" has brought Microsoft over $300 million. This is noteworthy considering the game was nearly 4 years old at the time of its release on Sony's platform.

As stated by Alinea Analytics analyst Rhys Elliott, sales of Forza Horizon 5 on PS5 have already surpassed the 5 million copies mark. He noted that Xbox's strategy of releasing its games on third-party platforms is directly linked to Microsoft's stringent business profitability requirements.

That's over $300M in revenue from a port of a four-year old game.

Xbox's move to third-party is no mystery, especially given Microsoft's lofty profitability mandates.

The company does not disclose official sales figures. However, it was already known back in 2022 that Forza Horizon 5 had reached 20 million players on PC and Xbox in less than seven months after launch — including Game Pass subscribers. The in-game rating currently stands at about 53.7 million users, although the majority of this audience likely did not purchase the game.

The Forza Horizon series has long remained one of Xbox's most successful franchises. Last year, the founder of Playground Games, Gavin Raeburn, stated that Horizon earns more than Gran Turismo, F1, Need for Speed, and The Crew combined.

Since 2024, Xbox has been increasingly porting its major releases to competitors' platforms, and the story of Forza Horizon 5 shows that this approach appears capable of generating significant revenue.

The next installment in the series — Forza Horizon 6 — will be released this year. According to Microsoft, the game will first appear on PC and Xbox, with the PS5 version arriving later.
