Amazon again twists the "Invincible" canon — Tech Jacket is now a woman

The animated show's creators made a sharp change for season four: Tech Jacket, who was Zack Thompson in the comics, will appear on screen as Zoe. Actress Zoe Deutsch will provide the voice.

Originally, Tech Jacket reads as a regular teen bonded to an alien suit — that setup carried a lot of the character's appeal. What has people talking isn't only the gender swap but what it might do to Zack's relationship with Allen. Fans feared, e.g., that the show could muffle the comic’s specific rapport between the two; their bromance was a scene-stealer many wanted to see translated faithfully, i.e., with the same blunt humor and awkward warmth.

This change follows other departures from the source material. Some viewers point to season one — where Mark Grayson's romantic storyline was reshaped on-screen — as an earlier example of the adaptation taking its own path, for better or worse.
